Evans in (loan), Kenwyne out (injury)
By: Lucas | January 4th, 2008And Sunderland’s first move of the January transfer window is: Defender Jonny Evans on loan from Manchester United for the rest of the season. This is Evans’ second loan spell with the Black Cats, having been with the team during their promotion run last season in the Championship. Evans was arrested for rape at the Man Utd Christmas party and is currently out on bail.
Evans will presumably be inserted straightaway into Roy Keane’s lineup for tomorrow’s 3rd round FA Cup tie with Wigan. Presumably to miss the game will be striker Kenwyne Jones, who limped off at halftime during the midweek league match at Ewood Park with a knee injury.
Danny Higginbotham says the team can win without Jones, who has been our only consistent scoring threat up front the entire season. Says Higginbotham, whose handball in the box led to the penalty that gave Blackburn the 1-0 win, “We have other able players up front who can do a job.” Those other players right now include: Michael Chopra (injured), Andy Cole (old), Anthony Stokes (left off the squad at Blackburn — doghouse?), Daryl Murphy, and seventeen-year old Martyn Waghorn.
Joining Chopra and Jones in sick bay is Dickson Etuhu (knee), who will leave the team soon anyway to join the Nigerian squad for ACN. Carlos Edwards and Nyron Nosworthy are still out. Oh and Higginbotham has a broken toe.
Gee, that’s a lot of injuries. I wonder how the team would be performing if all of our starters were healthy for, say, an entire month. Wouldn’t that be neat?
