FA Cup 3rd Round Draw: Wigan at SOL

By: Lucas | December 2nd, 2007

stokoefacup.jpgToday Sunderland have drawn Wigan Athletic as their opponent when they enter the FA Cup in the 3rd round on January 5.

Wigan dealt Sunderland a 3-0 whipping in league at the JJB in August. 10 days prior to that, Sunderland were knocked out of the Carling Cup on another 3-0 scoreline, embarrassingly to Luton. So this is a chance for revenge and cup redemption all at once.

One thing of note from today’s 3rd round draw: there are 4 matches between Premiership sides, meaning there are guaranteed to be 4 Premiership sides going home after just one match in the FA Cup. I’m confident Sunderland will not be one of those teams. They’ve got a tough month ahead in the league, but if they can keep their heads above water for the next 6 matches (which include trips to Stamford Bridge and Ewood Park, and home ties vs Man Utd. and Aston Villa), they’ll have massive confidence and momentum. And who knows? Maybe the ghost of Bob Stokoe will smile on the Red & White and propel us to another magical cup run. (Maybe it would help if Roy Keane wore an awesome hat like Bob Stokoe…?)
