Flash Gordon
By: Lucas | August 7th, 2007Roy Keane has made his most expensive purchase of the offseason: at £9m, Scotland international and Heart of Midlothian goalkeeper Craig Gordon is now a Black Cat.
With the recent spate of big money acquisitions failing to materialize (most recently Wigan defender Leighton Baines just signed with Everton), the team continues to look to add one more piece to fill out the squad ahead of their EPL opener Saturday against Tottenham. There have been grumblings about the inability to sign players like Baines and David Nugent, suggestions that players are rejecting the idea of playing on Wearside. To those grumblings, Chairman Niall Quinn offered this: “It’s been suggested people have turned us down - but it might be the other way around as well. Character is important to us. The players showed it in abundance last season and if you’re not prepared to scrap in a Sunderland shirt, Roy Keane and Sunderland is not the place for you.”
Curious in that case that Keane and Quinn are in hot pursuit of “mercurial” Egyptian forward Mido. If he signs with SAFC, will his infamous antics be too much of a distraction, outweighing his undeniable worth as a goal-scorer? Gary “I scored a hat trick vs the scum” Rowell doesn’t think so: “Mido is just one of five [strikers at Spurs], whereas if he came to Sunderland he would be the No 1 striker. I think that might suit him,” said Number One is Gary Rowell, adding, “He would be easier to handle if he was playing every week, as he would be at Sunderland.”
Personally I would love to see a guy like Mido playing for a guy like Keano. Especially if they can secure him in the next 3 days.

Gordon’s a good signing, even for 9 million. He’s a great keeper. If nothing else, you’ll have a lot of new fans north of the border with Scotland’s number one between your posts.
