Keano’s Learning Curve
By: Lucas | July 31st, 2007
The transfer market has not been kind to Roy Keane in his first time having a go at the Premiership. The players he’s most wanted (Nugent, Baines, Gordon) have rejected his advances, and with due respect to Keiran Richardson the players he’s gotten are either unproven at the highest level (Etuhu) or unpopular with the Mackems (Chopra). With a month left until the transfer window closes, Keane appears resignedly happy with the squad he has now, and ready to focus his attention on the coaching, rather than personnel management side of the job.
“[the] kind of manager I wanted to be…was someone who focuses on the players,” said St. Roy. “You need to know what players need and what they don’t need. Who needs a kick up the backside, who needs an arm around them. That’s the beauty of the job.”
Right now Keane’s boys are in Ireland ahead of their date with Galway United tomorrow night (where they’ll debut their Royal Blue alternate kits). Last night at Cork City the Black Cats were down a goal, whereupon Keane “spoke [to] the players at half-time and encouraged them to enjoy it.” No word if this encouragement took the form of a kick up the backside or an arm around the shoulder, but the second half saw the Wearsiders play much better, and Corkman Liam Miller evened the score to salvage a 1-1 draw.
