Loss

By: Lucas | September 12th, 2007

Ian Porterfield, hero of Sunderland’s improbable 1973 FA Cup win over Leeds Utd, has died at the age of 61. After his playing days ended, he managed many teams, including national teams in Korea and Armenia; but the first thing people will think about when they think of Porterfield is his legendary goal to give SAFC the Cup:

If this sad loss is going to inspire Sunderland to shake off their current poor form, they’ll be doing it without Kieran Richardson. The £5.5m winger will be out for up to three months with a stress fracture in his back. Compounding this is the fact that Trinidadian star Carlos Edwards has reaggravated the hamstring injury that has kept him out of the past three matches, and may miss the next four. Ouch and ouch again.

Saturday’s game vs Reading just became a lot more difficult and important. It’s time for Roy’s boys to pull together as a team and show people what they’re made of.

Respects to Sunderland, fans and Ian’s family. Ian Porterfield between 1991 and 1993 was manager of Chelsea and in his short time as Chelsea boss, did a reasonable job - he will live on with the Leeds haters (of any club not just Chelsea) with the goal he scored in the 1973 FA Cup final..

    RIP
    IAN PORTERFIELD
