McShane under scrutiny

By: Lucas | October 9th, 2007

Defender Paul McShane’s crunching tackle on Alexander Hleb late in Sunderland’s 3-2 loss at Emirates last weekend led to a straight red and a three match ban; and the Irishman may be in hot water with his boss, too. Roy Keane intends to look at the video of the incident and determine if the club should punish McShane for his cleats-up challenge on the Belarussian winger (reminiscent perhaps of Dan Smith’s vicious tackle of Abou Diaby two seasons ago at the Stadium of Light, which resulted in a gruesome ankle injury).

Arsenal defender Kolo Toure believes McShane intended to injure Hleb, but Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones was supportive of his teammate, saying: “It wasn’t intentional. Paul McShane is not one to come in and do something like that.” Whatever the case, it’ll suck not having the bruising fullback in the lineup for the next three games (he’s also suspended for Ireland’s Euro qualifier against Germany next weekend).
