“One of Us!”
By: Lucas | August 17th, 2007When Che Keano signed Michael Chopra in July, most SAFC faithful probably dropped their pints and screamed bad words. I’m only a Sunderland fan for 2 or 3 years now, and I know I was surprised to hear that we’d picked up the guy who’d come up through the Newcastle system, a self-described Geordie even today, whose only Premiership goal to date was at the Stadium of Light – for NUFC in April 2006 (I was at the game, btw). The Mackems’ distaste for Chopra deepened last year when, playing for Cardiff City against SAFC in the League Championship, he said, “It would mean so much to me to score against Sunderland. When you grow up on the streets of Newcastle, those are the games you dream of playing in. To get the chance to play against Sunderland for Cardiff is great and I’ll be extremely happy if I score.”
Choice words, indeed.
But it didn’t take long for Chopra to win the hearts of the Red & White Army, with his injury time winner against Tottenham last weekend, and his equalizer at Birmingham City in midweek. The excellent writers over at A Love Supreme have used plenty of ink this week extolling their love of “Chops,” and the Mackems are singing his name from the terraces.
