THEM are coming
By: Lucas | November 7th, 2007This Saturday at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland will take on arch nemeses newcastle united for the first time since April 2006. That last installment of the Wear-Tyne derby was notable for a few reasons, not all of them very good for SAFC:
- Sunderland were playing as Premiership “lame-ducks”, having been relegated the previous weekend in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.
- Alan Shearer scored the final competitive goal of his career, on a penalty kick in the second half. He would take a knee injury ten minutes later that effectively ended his career.
- Michael Chopra scored his first goal in the premiership, and what would prove to be his only goal ever for the mags.
And yours truly was in attendance that day. Despite the horrific scoreline (4-1 to the scum) it was a pretty amazing time: hanging out in the club level at the Stadium of Light before the match; drinking pints of John Smith’s Bitter and eating curried jacket potatoes; making bets on the game at the bookie right there in the stadium (something you’ll never see here in the States, where mainstream society has an almost pathological fear of gambling); getting to meet all the other Mackems who had come to the game (some from as far away as London); and the sight of a 60+ bus Toon army caravan coming to the stadium from Newcastle.
This weekend they return, and hopefully the magpie mobs will go home sad, having been given a dose of revenge by the Red and White.
Will Michael Chopra score against his former (and boyhood) team? Will Carlos Edwards return to make his mark on this historic derby? Will Keano’s boys get off the schnide and just win a damn game already? This would certainly be a good time for it.
More to come, stay tuned.
