Transfer bytes
By: Lucas | January 14th, 2008The Stephen Hunt sweepstakes are now up to £5 million, and a deal to bring the Reading winger to Wearside is close to being completed (though Hunt, playing his best Sergeant Schultz, knows nothink!).
Remember when Sunderland were peeking at Chelsea benchwarmer Steve Sidwell? Yeah, seems a long time ago, before the transfer headlines were dominated by Hunt and Robbie Thank-god-he-went-to-Derby Savage. Well it appears the Red & White will get the former Reading midfielder on a loan, but not until the African Cup of Nations is over and Chelsea can afford to let Sidwell go.
I’m still A) baffled that Sidwell went to Chelsea on a free transfer, since the words “to Chelsea” and “free transfer” should never appear in the same sentence, especially when Chelsea have been so famously spendthrifty in recent years; and B) bemused that he never got any playing time at the London club. The man is very nearly national team quality, and was a huge factor in Reading’s success in gaining promotion to the EPL two years ago, and nearly qualifying for Europe last season.
Sidwell will be loaned to Sunderland by the end of January on a six-month deal, and should it prove a successful venture it could become a permanent move. Either of these two – Hunt and Sidwell – would be a boon for the SAFC midfield; to have both, combined with Kieran Richardson and (if/whenever he’s fully fit) Carlos Edwards, would give the Mackems a real reason to be optimistic about staying up.
We shall see what we shall see. Stay tuned.
