Transfer Rumors: Hunt to Black Cats?
By: Lucas | December 18th, 2007
Ahead of Saturday’s match at Madejski Stadium, the Sunderland Echo is reporting multiple rumors involving Reading players coming to Sunderland during the January transfer window.
As I earlier reported in this space, Roy Keane has been looking very closely at former Reading captain and current Chelsea benchwarmer Steve Sidwell. Now, according to the Vital Chelsea blog, Sidwell may either be sold to Sunderland or loaned out to any number of teams, including his former club Reading.
But the real news from the Echo piece is the rumored interest Keane is showing in two current Reading players, midfielder Stephen Hunt and striker Kevin Doyle. Both have been very effective during their time at Reading, and in keeping with current Sunderland zeitgeist, both are Irish.
Hunt, who earned a place in the Royals’ starting 11 thanks to an injury to erstwhile American wunderkind Bobby Convey, and made a name for himself by fracturing Petr Cech’s skull last season, is mum on the possibility of a move to Keano’s Stadium of Light. His energy and skill in midfield would be a fantastic addition to the Sunderland squad; as his manager Steve Coppell points out, “You want 11 Stephen Hunts in your side. He gives you 100% commitment to the cause”
Considering Sunderland’s current goal scoring difficulties, either of these two dynamic young Irishmen would be a welcome addition to the team. Ideally they will both play well this weekend but lose a tough home game to a scrappy Black Cats squad.

After the red-cardless skull fracture incident, that still gives me shivers down my spine, I would never be proud to have Hunt on my side. Surely SAFC can do better.
