Sunderland in for Tallest Player in Soccer

By: Stephen | June 7th, 2009

I was looking around the net this morning with my usual cup of coffee, and wondering now that the regular season is over with, who is new Manager Steve Bruce looking at. Shocking to me, he’s looking at Nikola Zigic, the tallest man in soccer. He stands at 6 foot 8. That’s one big dude, and he’s a striker too.

Full Name:Nikola Zigic
Birth Date:September 25, 1980
Height:2.02m
Weight:96 kg
Age:28
Position:Forward
Squad:12

Now I don’t know too much about, him because I don’t get the Spanish League here in Buffalo. But I figure he’s good enough to be at Valencia, he’s more than good enough to be at Sunderland. Yeah, yeah I know, he was loaned out last year. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/stats?id=86349&&cc=5901 . But if we can have a tall target man whom the middies can lob it into, we could be dangerous. Now, the only key is can he transfer his game to the English game? We’ve seen lots of very talented players in the EPL (and the old First Division). So maybe it might take him a bit, but a striker of his ability trying to find his footing, is better than most of the strikers who have run out for Sunderland.

The key is, can Niall float an attractive enough deal to make Valencia bite? I hope so, seeing him strut his stuff at SOL, would be amazing.

he wasn’t good enough at Valencia, that is why they loaned him out to Racing Santander.

He never got a real chance at Valencia because I don’t think they have anyone who knows how to cross the ball properly. He’s very well suited for the English game….he is very calm on the ball, has excellent first touch, is good in the air and surprisingly capable with his feet. Some say he’s slow, but it’s hard to say with a guy that tall…his long strides make him look slower than he really is. Think of a well built Peter Crouch, since this guy is definitely not skinny and won’t be pushed around. Personally I think he’d be a great fit with a club like Stoke, but I didn’t get much chance to see Sunderland play this year so it may be a similar style. I’m surprised no one in the EPL has snatched him up yet.

Will Valencia bite? Valencia might pay you to take him off their hands. Niko isn’t that bad to be honest, but his playing style might be more suited to the EPL more than La Liga.
